A finger bowl is a small bowl of water (sometimes with a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint) presented at the table so diners can rinse their fingertips after eating foods that are messy or eaten by hand.
-
In traditional formal dining, the finger bowl is often served with the dessert (or last) course — after the main meal — but in more informal or older service styles it can be brought after any course involving finger foods.
-
To use it properly: gently dip your fingertips of one hand into the water, then dab them dry on your napkin; then repeat with the other hand. Avoid swirling or splashing.
